Interact. This is a definitive underground classic of the genre. There is absolutely nothing else like this album. While it may not be as developed or technically intricate as Madvillainy, this album just gives me a feeling that Madvillainy can't. The way DOOM perfectly tailors his rhymes to his beatsand the way both equally convey that cartoonish villain persona entrances you right from the start. His hypnotic flow, dizzying wordplay, and classic lo-fi production that you'd expect from a mixtape just transport you somewhere else. After spending years binge drinking (which is largely responsible for his voice growing increasingly deep and coarse over time) and wandering the streets of New York, sometimes without a home, DOOM was finally ready to accept his brother Subroc's untimely death and the demise of their group, KMD. Disillusioned with labels and the music industry in general, he decided to go the independent route and don a mask to symbolize the primacy of the music.
Initially he would just wear pantyhose over his head but by 1997, with the release of five singles from the album, Daniel Dumile had evolved an entirely different persona from Zev Love X - MF DOOM.He manages to portray this larger than life villain throughout the album without taking himself too seriously in the process. From his off-key singing on Dead Bent reminiscent of a drunk uncle and the Scooby Doo samples on Hey!, to the Saturday morning cartoon skits and CucumberSlice (better known as Bobbito, one of the main individuals responsible for putting DOOM on)'s hilarious feature on Rhymes Like Dimes, DOOM manages to keep the album incredibly entertaining despite the density of the lyrics, whose meaning may not be apparent until you actually sit down and read them. You see DOOM starting to develop his signature style on this album - most notably, his desire to have a conversation with the listener. This is accomplished on tracks such as Hey! Where he will set up a rhyme so that we expect him to say one thing, and then he says something totally different, as if correcting us.Intelligent, used to write and be well spokeNow all a nigga wanna do is fight and sell - tell jokeMost of the features, all fellow MCs of the Monsta Island Czars, are solid. MF Grimm holds his own on Tick, Tick amidst some clever tempo changes. Who You Think I Am is the posse cut and probably my least favorite track, but still not a weak one by any means. As for King Geedorah, DOOM had been using the moniker since 1997 as member of MIC, but this is his first appearance on record (Red and Gold, Who You Think I Am, Operation Greenbacks).Doomsday, Dead Bent and Gas Drawls are contenders for my favorite DOOM song period.
Other highlights are Rhymes Like Dimes, Go With The Flow, The Finest, Red and Gold, Hey!, and?DOOM is my favorite MC of all-time and I consider him a top five producer as well (if you haven't checked out his ten instrumental tapes, Special Herbs, go do it - NOW). Although I might give the edge to Madvillainy, this album will always occupy a special place for me because it creates and maintains an atmosphere, in the same way other classics such as 36 Chambers and The Low End Theory did prior, so that you don't just feel like you're listening to another hip hop album - it's an experience. You feel like you have been pulled into this universe that DOOM has created, and he's guiding you through it with each track. That said, if you're looking to get into DOOM - I think Vaudeville Villain and The Mouse and the Mask are his two most accessible projects because they have fewer skits and more traditional production. Start with those before delving into the big three (Operation Doomsday, Mm.Food, Madvillainy).
He has such a consistent discography that you really can't go wrong though. They have two albums. Hood dropped in 91 and sounds like Native Tongues stuff of the time, worth checking out if you're into De La, Brand Nubian, etc.

And just for the amusement you'll get out of hearing teenage DOOM. Black Bastards was supposed to come out in 93 (just after his brother had died) but got shelved cause of the. They were then dropped from Elektra, so it wasn't properly released till 01 on DOOM's label. I think it would have been a classic if it was released when it was supposed to be.
It's a lot darker than their first record, similar to Organized Konfusion. Definitely recommend it. As NPR recently put it, it's the 'missing link' between Zev Love X and DOOM cause it's no longer Five Percenter lyrics.
